Kerala Backwaters
Kerala - "God's own Country" - is one of the most favoured rejuvenation destinations in the world tourism map. The complex network of rivers, streams, lakes and canal interconnected with each other have been given a common term "Kerala Backwaters". Kerala is graced by the Arabian Sea on the west and has a network of rivers criss crossing the emerald greens within. In total there are 41 west-flowing rivers and these backwaters stretch to almost 1,900 kilometers.
The major backwaters are Kumarakom backwaters, Kollam backwaters, Trivandrum backwaters, Alleppey backwaters, and Kochi backwaters. The largest backwater stretch is the Vembanad Lake, while Alappuzha is one of the major centers for backwater boat trips. The intricate network of canals through the town of Alappuzha has earned it the sobriquet "The Venice of the East".
The boat trip through the backwaters of Kerala is dramatic and takes one through many interesting places like Kuttanad region, Alapuzzha etc. Also known as rice bowl of Kerala, Kuttanad is the only region perhaps in the continent where farming is done below sea level. It is the rain season that these backwaters are in full swing and splendour revealing their phenomenal charm. Various boat races are organized in this season and seasoned oarsmen test their skills. The boat races of Kerala have attained international fame.
